Top brand ic! berlin launches plotic series 3D printing glasses

3D printed fashion accessories have been around for some time, but when it comes to 3D printed eyewear, there haven't been many market-ready products that truly resonated with the general public. However, this might be about to change. Earlier this year, the renowned German eyewear brand ic! berlin introduced a new line of 3D printed glasses called "plotic," signaling a potential shift in the industry. As one of the leading names in the eyewear world, ic! berlin has long been known for its high-quality steel and acetate frames. Their decision to use selective laser sintering (SLS), a type of 3D printing technology, to create sunglasses makes perfect sense. The company reportedly began experimenting with this technique several years ago, and now they're taking it to the next level with the plotic series. The plotic collection includes two pure 3D printed sunglasses and two hybrid models that combine 3D printed parts with metal. All designs feature a half-ring structure and come in eight different color options, offering both style and versatility. According to Julius Iversen, the chief designer at ic! berlin, the glasses are made from polyamide PA220, a material that's not only hypoallergenic and certified for food and water safety, but also has a molecular structure similar to natural silk. He explained that PA220 is lightweight—30% lighter than acetate—and durable. It also allows for various post-processing techniques such as polishing, dyeing, metallization, and flocking. Iversen believes that 3D printing opens up new possibilities in eyewear design. “Plotic enables us to create any geometry without the constraints of traditional manufacturing,” he said. “For example, our plotic-metal hybrid structure would have been impossible to achieve using conventional methods. Now, we just need a digital file to produce it.” He added that 3D printing also allows for features like silicone nose pads, which are not feasible with traditional materials. This improves comfort and ensures a better fit for all face shapes. Beyond functionality, the aesthetic appeal of the plotic series is impressive. As one of the top eyewear brands, ic! berlin knows how to blend form and function. The collection was first unveiled at the Opti 2015 optical show in Munich, where it received significant attention. In a statement, ic! berlin expressed excitement about the future of the plotic series. “The future of plotic is open, and we’re just getting started,” they said, hinting at more innovative projects to come. With its combination of cutting-edge technology, sleek design, and user-friendly features, the plotic series is setting a new standard in the world of 3D printed eyewear. It's a clear sign that the future of fashion and eyewear is being shaped by digital innovation.
