OFWeek 3D Printing News: As 3D printing technology continues to evolve, we may soon see a time when 3D printed objects are not just functional but also interactive and visually engaging. Researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology have taken a major step forward by developing a new printing technique that allows flexible electroluminescent materials to be applied directly onto flat surfaces. This breakthrough enables the integration of light-emitting coatings into 3D printed objects, making them capable of illumination.
"The electroluminescent component can provide lighting even when the circuit is damaged," said the research team. "Additionally, this technology offers a way to visualize the internal structure of 3D printed objects." The process also makes it possible to soften materials like paper and plastic, expanding the range of applications for this innovative method.
Dr. Kling from the Institute of Light Technology at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology explained, "Typically, the luminescent material is sandwiched between two layers of plastic." However, with this new approach, the electroluminescent layer can be directly printed onto a 3D object, allowing for creative and seamless decoration without the need for extra materials.
Elodie Chardin, one of the engineers involved in the development, added, "This technique also allows for the cost-effective application of uniform electroluminescent layers on various surfaces." The ability to integrate lighting into 3D printed designs opens up exciting possibilities for both design and functionality.
The project was carried out in collaboration between the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the Binder Connector Group. It took approximately two years to complete, with funding provided mainly by the German Environmental Foundation, which supports sustainable and environmentally friendly initiatives. This partnership highlights the growing interest in combining advanced manufacturing with eco-conscious solutions.
