Top brand ic! berlin launches plotic series 3D printing glasses

3D printed fashion accessories have been around for some time, but when it comes to 3D printed eyewear, there hasn’t been a widely accepted market product that appeals to the masses. However, this might be about to change. Earlier this year, the renowned German eyewear brand ic! berlin introduced a new line of 3D printed glasses called "plotic," signaling a potential shift in the industry. As one of the leading names in the eyewear world, ic! berlin has long been known for its high-quality steel and acetate frames. Their decision to embrace selective laser sintering (SLS), a type of 3D printing technology, is both innovative and logical. The company reportedly began experimenting with this method several years ago, and now they're taking it to the next level with the plotic collection. The plotic series includes two fully 3D printed sunglasses and two hybrid models that combine 3D printed material with metal. These designs feature a half-ring structure and come in eight different colors, offering a wide range of style options. According to Julius Iversen, the chief designer at ic! berlin, the glasses are made from polyamide PA220, a material known for being hypoallergenic and certified for food and water safety. It has a molecular structure similar to natural silk, making it ideal for eyewear. “PA220 is strong, flexible, and 30% lighter than acetate. It also allows for various post-treatment processes like polishing, dyeing, and metallization,” he explained. Iversen believes that 3D printing opens up entirely new possibilities in eyewear design. “Plotic enables us to create complex geometries that were previously impossible with traditional manufacturing methods. For example, our plotic-metal hybrid design couldn’t be achieved by cutting raw materials, but with 3D printing, we only need a single digital file,” he said. He also highlighted how 3D printing allows for the integration of silicone nose pads into the frames, something that wasn’t feasible before. This improves comfort and ensures a perfect fit for all face shapes. At the Opti 2015 optical show in Munich, the plotic series made its debut, showcasing the brand’s commitment to innovation. Through their announcement, ic! berlin expressed excitement about the future of 3D printed eyewear. “The future of plotic is open, and we’re just getting started,” they stated, hinting at more exciting developments to come. With its blend of advanced technology and elegant design, the plotic series represents a bold step forward in the world of fashion eyewear. It not only demonstrates the potential of 3D printing but also highlights how traditional craftsmanship can merge with modern innovation to create something truly unique.
