Can 3D printed objects still emit light?

OFWeek 3D Printing News: As 3D printing technology continues to evolve, we may soon see a future where printed objects serve practical and functional purposes. Researchers from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology recently announced a breakthrough in this field, stating, "We have developed a new printing technique that allows flexible electroluminescent materials to be applied on flat surfaces." This innovation enables electroluminescent coatings to be directly integrated into 3D-printed objects, making them capable of emitting light. The electroluminescent components can provide illumination even when the main circuit fails, according to the research team. Additionally, this technology opens up new possibilities for visualizing the internal structure of 3D-printed objects. It also allows for the softening of materials like paper and plastic, expanding the range of applications for such printed items. Dr. Kling, a researcher at the Institute of Light Technology at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, explained, "Typically, the luminescent material is sandwiched between two layers of plastic." However, with the new method, it's now possible to print the electroluminescent layer directly onto a 3D-printed object, eliminating the need for additional substances while enhancing the aesthetic appeal of uneven surfaces. Elodie Chardin, one of the engineers involved in developing the materials and process, added, "This approach makes it feasible to apply a uniform electroluminescent layer at a lower cost across various surfaces." The ability to illuminate and decorate objects without extra materials represents a significant step forward in the integration of lighting and 3D printing. The project was a collaborative effort between the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the Binder Connector Group, taking approximately two years to complete. The research was primarily funded by the German Environmental Foundation, which supports projects aimed at promoting sustainability and environmental innovation. This development not only highlights the potential of 3D printing but also shows how it can merge with other technologies to create more functional and visually appealing products.
