Smart home widgets can also change lives

System layout, high cost, and burning money

Smart homes sound impressive, but many consumers still don’t fully understand what they really mean. A smart home system, also known as a digital home system, combines the Internet, Internet of Things (IoT), computers, and multimedia technologies to manage household equipment, daily life, and the home environment. The core idea is to connect all electrical devices in a home through a central hub, allowing users to control them from a single interface. This includes everything from lighting and air conditioning to security systems and entertainment setups.

According to Wei Xiaofei, a designer at Dong Yi Risheng, a smart home essentially connects various devices—like audio systems, lighting controls, window shades, air conditioning, security systems, and even RFID technology—through a home network. This enables users to control their home remotely via devices like an iPad, smartphone, or voice assistant. It also allows for automated scene settings where multiple devices work together, improving efficiency, comfort, and safety.

However, Wei pointed out that while the concept sounds great, most people only use parts of the system, such as lighting or home theaters. The cost is quite high, with smart home projects often running into tens of thousands or even millions of dollars. For many, it’s simply “burning money.” Still, there is relatively high acceptance among Beijing homeowners, who are more open to adopting these technologies.

One major challenge in installing a smart home is the wiring. As Wei explained, before setting up the entire system, the homeowner must communicate their needs with the interior designer. For example, if someone wants to control the lighting, the designer will work with the manufacturer to create a program that adjusts the lighting based on specific conditions, like dimming to 30% at night. Then, the designer develops a full plan, including wiring layouts and integration with smart home services.

The actual wiring is done by the renovation team, but the equipment manufacturer provides the necessary cables and guides the placement of both strong and weak power lines. After the hidden works are completed, the manufacturer checks and tests the system before teaching the homeowner how to use it. Wei emphasized that since strong and weak power lines need to be planned in advance, the positions of appliances cannot be changed later. Homeowners can add new features in the future, but adding new devices after construction is difficult. Therefore, it's crucial to plan the layout of smart devices before starting the renovation or finishing wall and floor work.

Some might wonder if wireless solutions could avoid this problem. Industry experts say it's possible to install wireless modules next to each device, but factors like room shape and furniture placement can affect signal strength, making it less reliable than wired systems.

Despite the complexity and high cost of full smart home systems, there are affordable smart devices that can bring convenience without a big budget. These gadgets allow regular appliances to become “smart” with minimal effort. For example:

1. **Shell Egg Air Purifier** – Control it via a mobile app, check historical pollution data, track clean air duration, and monitor power consumption. You can also switch it on and off remotely.

2. **IKEA Smart Charging Furniture** – Charge your phone, tablet, and other devices simply by placing them in designated spots on the furniture. This convenient solution is set to launch in China later this year.

These smart widgets are helping people experience the benefits of a smart home without the high costs or complicated installations. Whether you're upgrading your current setup or planning a new home, smart technology is becoming more accessible and practical for everyday users.
