Smart home widgets can also change lives

System layout, high cold, burning money

Smart homes sound impressive, but many consumers still don’t fully understand what they really mean. A smart home system, also known as a digital home system, combines the Internet, the Internet of Things, computers, and multimedia technologies to manage home equipment, daily life, and the living environment. The main idea is to connect household appliances through a central gateway and integrate their settings and controls into one operating system. This allows users to control specific devices from a single interface and even operate them remotely. According to Wei Xiaofei, a designer at Dong Yi Risheng, smart homes essentially enable various devices—like audio systems, lighting, curtains, air conditioning, security systems, digital theaters, network appliances, RFID technology, and more—to be connected via a home network. This makes it possible for users to control these devices using an iPad, iPod, remote control, phone, internet, or voice commands. It also supports automated scene control, where multiple devices can work together without user input, improving efficiency, comfort, and safety in the home.

However, Wei Xiaofei pointed out that although the concept sounds great, very few people actually install full smart home systems. Most users only implement partial features like lighting or home theaters. The cost is quite high, and the wiring involved during home renovation is complex and expensive. Projects often require budgets ranging from tens of thousands to millions of dollars. For most people, this is simply “burning money.” That said, Beijing homeowners tend to be more accepting of smart home solutions.

It's hard to rewire after the fact

Wei Xiaofei explained that smart home products typically consist of an operating platform, modules for controlling devices, and signal converters. Before setting up the entire system, homeowners need to communicate with designers about their specific needs. For example, if someone wants to control the lighting, the designer would discuss how much light is needed at night—say, 30% brightness—and then work with the manufacturer to develop a technical solution. Afterward, the designer creates the overall plan, coordinates with smart home providers, and lays out the wiring based on the blueprints.

"The wiring is done by the renovation team, but the cables come from the equipment manufacturer," Wei said. "They guide the placement of both strong and weak power lines and perform checks and debugging after the hidden works are completed. They also teach the homeowners how to use the system." He added that because strong and weak electricity must be planned in advance, the positions of home appliances cannot be changed later. While homeowners can add new functions in the future, adding more devices becomes difficult. Therefore, it’s crucial to plan the electrical layout before construction starts or before walls and floors are finished.

Since rewiring is tough, can we use wireless instead? Industry experts say it’s possible to install wireless modules next to each device. However, factors like room shape and furniture placement can interfere with signal transmission.

Widgets make life different

While full smart home systems are complex and costly, some affordable smart devices have become popular among those who want to enjoy convenience without a big budget. These devices allow ordinary appliances to be upgraded easily. For instance:

1. Shell Egg Air Purifier – You can check historical pollution levels, how long you’ve been breathing clean air, the amount of purified air, power consumption, and even turn it on or off remotely via a mobile app.

2. IKEA Smart Charging Furniture – Charge your phone, tablet, and other devices simply by placing them in designated spots on the furniture. This product will be available in China later this year.

These small smart gadgets show that you don’t need a full smart home system to experience the benefits of modern technology. With the right tools, even basic appliances can become part of a smarter, more convenient lifestyle.
