High-density lipoprotein: It carries cholesterol in surrounding tissues, which is then converted to bile acids or directly excreted from the intestines through bile. Very low density lipoprotein: transports endogenous triglycerides synthesized in the liver. In hepatocytes, glycerol H ester binds to APOB100, cholesterol, etc. to form VLDL and is released into the blood. In a low-fat diet, the intestinal mucosa also secretes some VLDL human blood. Most of the metabolism of VLDL human blood becomes low density lipoprotein (LDL). Since VLDL is metabolized slowly in blood and has a half-life of 6 to 12 hours, there is still a certain amount of VLDL in fasting blood. VLDL does not easily penetrate the inner membrane of the artery because it carries relatively little cholesterol and their particles are relatively large. Therefore, normal VLDL generally does not have an atherogenic effect. However, since glycerol triglyceride in VLDL accounts for 50% to 70% and cholesterol accounts for 8% to 12%, once VLDL levels are significantly increased, in addition to elevated triglycerides in plasma, cholesterol levels also increase.

Clinical significance of lipoprotein a (Lp-a):

Increased: seen in atherosclerotic cardio-cerebral vascular disease, acute myocardial infarction, familial hypercholesterolemia, diabetes, large aneurysms and certain cancers. Reduced: seen in liver disease, alcohol abuse, intake of neomycin and other drugs.
