Teach you how to improve the practicality of product packaging design
[Chinese Packaging Network News] Corrugated cardboard accessories, typically designed as inserts or folded components, play a crucial role in packaging by acting as barriers and fillers. These elements help to stabilize the contents, preventing them from shifting during transit and reducing the risk of damage. When analyzing the load that these accessories endure during storage and transportation, it's important to consider the forces applied from different directions. For instance, during horizontal movement (X-direction), if a vehicle suddenly brakes, the contents inside the package may move forward due to inertia. In such cases, the front and rear walls of the accessory will absorb the impact. Since corrugated cardboard has inherent cushioning properties, it helps to minimize the damage caused by sudden impacts. Additionally, the contents may come into contact with the side walls of the accessories or the top and bottom of the packaging, creating friction that slows down or stops their movement. The same principle applies in the vertical direction (Z-direction). When vertical vibrations or impacts occur (Y-direction), the internal items may shift up and down, leading to potential collisions with the top and bottom of the packaging. However, the cushioning materials used in the top and bottom of the box can help reduce the force of these impacts. Moreover, friction between the contents and the four walls of the accessory can further prevent unwanted movement. Except for specific applications, these accessories do not provide structural support to the entire package. Therefore, during stacking, they mainly serve to separate items rather than bear weight or contribute to structural integrity. Considering the possibility of damage to both the accessories and the packaging container during transport, it's worth noting that these accessories often occupy most of the internal space. This limits the movement of the product inside, reducing the chances of it colliding with the packaging walls. Due to this friction, the movement of the product is effectively controlled. As a result, the areas where the accessory and the packaging are impacted are less likely to suffer significant damage. Furthermore, since the accessories are protected by the outer container, they remain intact under normal storage conditions. The above analysis highlights the need for accessories to have good shock-absorbing properties and an appropriate coefficient of friction. In addition, for practical use and manufacturing purposes, the accessories must also possess sufficient fold resistance. During storage and transportation, these accessories are generally not subjected to heavy pressure and do not need to support the weight of the package. Therefore, the edge compression strength and bursting strength of corrugated board, as specified in GB/T 6543-2008 (S-2.1 and B-2.1 standards), are usually sufficient for most applications. A well-designed packaging system ensures that all protective features are just enough to safeguard the product throughout its journey from production to the end consumer. Over-packaging leads to unnecessary resource consumption and environmental waste. To achieve the best balance between product protection and sustainability, it’s essential to optimize material usage, design efficiency, and technological application. Based on industry experience, this article presents several strategies aimed at promoting more effective and eco-friendly packaging solutions for discussion and further development.
