As the global economic recession continues to have a severe impact, a new wave of trade protectionism is spreading from developed to developing countries, leading to an increase in trade barriers. China is increasingly encountering various trade restrictions. Meanwhile, according to reports from timber distributors in cities like Yangjiang, Zhanjiang, and Yangchun, the focus for the 2010 timber market was on three key areas: first, low-cost materials such as miscellaneous wood gained significant attention; second, there was a strong demand for absorbing large stock volumes in the market; third, medium to high-grade mahogany, like East African black Dalbergia, became popular among buyers.
The "post-holiday syndrome" has caused great fluctuations in the mahogany furniture market. It was reported that the Beijing classical mahogany furniture market has been significantly affected by the financial crisis, with the high-value-added segment being particularly quiet. Overall sales have dropped by about 50%. For example, a mahogany chair that originally cost 19,800 yuan fell to 8,800 yuan, while rosewood furniture saw its price drop from 23,000 to 11,000 yuan. A classical bookcase also experienced a sharp decline, from 110,000 to between 50,000 and 60,000 yuan, as sellers tried to attract customers back.
Due to this situation, the redwood raw material market after the holiday has remained relatively quiet, with very few transactions taking place. This week, Vietnamese Huanghua Pear logs with a diameter over 40 cm and lengths ranging from 1.5 to 18 meters were reported to be priced at 800,000 yuan per ton. Indian Lobular Rosewood was priced at 360,000 to 380,000 yuan per ton, similar to the end of last year.
According to traders, due to the high demand for Hainan Huanghuali and Vietnamese Huanghuali, and the recognition by industry experts that rosewood has health benefits for humans, rosewood is expected to attract considerable attention in 2010.
