How to identify the watch?

1. Back Cover of the Watch Case. On genuine watches, especially men's watches, the back cover is usually engraved with a significant amount of English text. This includes the brand name, country of manufacture, whether it's all-steel or semi-steel, and details about water resistance, anti-magnetism, and shock resistance. The original watch back cover also features a trademark or logo, often protected by a thin film. In some cases, there is a green "plum" label affixed to the back. Watches made in Switzerland may have specific engravings, such as "PLAQUEG10," which indicates that the case is gold-plated to a thickness of 10 microns. Counterfeit watches often lack these detailed markings, and instead, use materials like titanium nitride to mimic a gold finish. Additionally, the engravings on fake watches tend to be blurry and poorly executed.

2. Dial. Japanese-made watches typically have small numbers printed at the bottom of the dial, indicating the movement and plate number. Counterfeit dials usually lack these details. Some Swiss luxury brands, such as Patek Philippe or Omega, feature unique symbols or text on their dials. For example, an Omega Air Master men's watch has the word "TITOFLEX" printed in red at the bottom of the dial, along with glass or metal diamonds. British watches like Nomos may have "STARJEWEIS" written at the bottom. Counterfeit dials do not have these markings. Even when fake watches attempt to imitate such details, they often show flaws such as misaligned inserts, unclear engravings, or uneven inlays. The dial may also show scratches, discoloration, or poor-quality night-time elements. The night-time markers are often larger and unevenly placed, and the color of the hands and markers may not match.

3. The Watch Case. Fake watches often have rough or fuzzy engravings, or they may use phrases like "100% W & P" to mimic authenticity. Some counterfeit watches use semi-steel cases for all-steel models, making them less durable and less valuable than genuine ones.

Common English terms found on genuine watch cases include:

  • WATER RESISTANT – Water resistant
  • WATERPROOF – Waterproof
  • ANTIMAGNETIC – Anti-magnetic
  • ALL STAINLESS STEEL – All stainless steel case
  • STAINLESS STEEL BACK – Semi-steel case
  • SWISS MADE – Made in Switzerland
  • JAPAN MADE – Made in Japan
  • INCABLOC – Shock-absorbing system
  • PLAQUE G10 – 10-micron gold plating
  • AUTOMATIC – Automatic watch
  • JEWEIS – Diamond

These markings are essential for identifying authentic timepieces and distinguishing them from counterfeits. Paying attention to these details can help ensure you're purchasing a genuine product.
