[Zhejiang University] Oxygen bomb type calorimeter control box
The oxygen bomb calorimeter control box is a crucial component in the physical chemistry experiment, particularly for measuring the heat of combustion. In many universities across China, the GR3500 oxygen bomb calorimeter is widely used for this purpose. However, its original control box comes with several limitations that affect both cost and safety. One major issue is the need for a specific ignition wire provided by the manufacturer, which is expensive and increases the overall experimental cost. Additionally, the output voltage of the original control box is low, often leading to failed ignitions and repeated attempts, which can be frustrating for students. Another serious problem arises when students improperly install the device or fail to disconnect the power after ignition, causing short circuits and potentially damaging the transformer, which results in costly repairs or even total loss of the control box. These issues pose significant safety risks during experiments. To address these challenges, we have designed an improved oxygen bomb calorimeter control box. This new design allows the use of common copper wire (such as scrap wires) as an ignition wire, eliminating the need for expensive specialized components. This not only reduces the experimental cost but also significantly improves the success rate of ignition. The control box features a push-button switch for ignition, which helps prevent accidental operations and ensures that the power is properly turned off after each use. This greatly enhances the safety of the experiment and reduces the risk of damage to the equipment. Furthermore, the new control box uses a standard plug, making it compatible with various oxygen bomb calorimeters and easy to replace. It was developed as part of the "New Experiment and Experimental Teaching Reform Project" at the National Chemical Experiment Teaching Demonstration Center of Zhejiang University. Since September 2012, the control box has been successfully applied in the "Intermediate Chemistry Experiment II" and "University Chemistry Experiment P" courses conducted by the Intermediate Chemistry Laboratory. To date, it has been used for over 4,272 person-hours, with excellent performance and user feedback. The device is user-friendly, stable, and has proven to be highly reliable in real classroom settings. The production cost of the control box is very low, with each unit costing less than 120 yuan. Given the widespread use of the GR3500 oxygen bomb calorimeter in physical chemistry labs across Chinese universities, our design offers great potential for broader application and adoption.
