Oxygen Bomb Calorimeter Control Box: Function and Introduction The determination of combustion heat is a fundamental part of physical chemistry experiments. In many Chinese universities, the GR3500 oxygen bomb calorimeter is commonly used for this purpose. However, the original control box that comes with the device has several limitations. It requires the use of specific ignition wires provided by the manufacturer, which are costly and increase the overall experimental expenses. Additionally, the ignition voltage from the control box is often too low, leading to frequent ignition failures. In some cases, students may improperly install the equipment, causing short circuits or leaving the ignition power on after firing, which can damage the transformer and even lead to safety hazards. To address these issues, we developed an improved oxygen bomb calorimeter control box. This new design allows the use of regular copper wire as the ignition wire, eliminating the need for expensive, specialized wires. This not only reduces costs but also increases the success rate of ignition. The control box features a push-button switch for ignition, which helps prevent accidental operation and avoids potential short circuits caused by improper handling. It also ensures that the power is turned off promptly after ignition, significantly improving the safety of the experiment. The control box uses a standard plug, making it compatible with various types of oxygen bomb calorimeters and easy to replace. This design was supported by the "New Experiment and Experimental Teaching Reform Project" at the National Chemical Experiment Teaching Demonstration Center of Zhejiang University. Since September 2012, the device has been successfully applied in courses such as "Intermediate Chemistry Experiment II" and "University Chemistry Experiment P." To date, over 4,272 person-hours have been recorded using this equipment. It is user-friendly, stable, and has proven to be highly effective in teaching. The cost per unit is very low, typically under 120 yuan, making it an economical choice for educational institutions. Given that many universities across China still use the GR3500 oxygen bomb calorimeter in their physical chemistry experiments, our control box offers great potential for broader application. If other institutions or universities are interested in the design drawings or technical materials, we are happy to provide them free of charge. This innovation not only improves the efficiency and safety of the experiment but also promotes cost-effective and sustainable laboratory practices.
