It's often claimed that engineers and scientists aren't into fashion, but this stereotype is clearly not always true. David Ng, the founder of Cnaptic, a company that develops STEM-based solutions using emerging technologies, is a perfect example of someone who bridges the gap between engineering and style. Recently, he created a unique smartwatch that blends cutting-edge technology with fashion elements.
The watch features 3D-printed components and an unusual seven-segment LED display that stands out from traditional timepieces. What makes it even more interesting is its motion sensor—when you lift your wrist, the screen lights up randomly, and when you lower it, the display turns off automatically. This clever design adds a futuristic touch to the user experience.
3D printed smart watch detects alcohol concentration
The case and strap are made using 3D printing, and the watch is powered by a USB PowerBank. It uses an Arduino as its control system. Inspired by his wife, David added a new feature: an alcohol sensor that measures the user’s blood alcohol level. This helps users check their alcohol content before heading out to a party, ensuring they don’t exceed legal limits. Simply blowing into the sensor will trigger an alarm if the level is too high, reminding the user to take a taxi instead of driving.
This watch looks like a time bomb
Despite its innovative features, the watch has one major downside: it’s quite large, measuring over ten centimeters in length and taking up most of the wearer’s forearm. The size makes it look bulky and even a bit like a giant time bomb, which isn’t exactly the most stylish look. However, David doesn’t mind. He says the attention it gets is exactly what he wanted. In fact, he mentioned that his 3D-printed watch has even caught the attention of the police during traffic stops. “It feels great,†he said. “That’s exactly what I was going for!â€
NG's current plan is to shrink its size as soon as possible.
David now plans to make the watch smaller and more compact, turning it into a sleeker, smarter device that’s easier to wear and use. If you're curious about how it works, be sure to check out the video below for a closer look at this fascinating project.
