Wearing a 3D printed smart watch is no longer afraid of drunk driving!

Some people say that engineers and scientists lack a sense of fashion, but this view is clearly one-sided. David Ng, the founder of Cnaptic, is a mechanical engineer who proves otherwise. His company focuses on developing STEM-based solutions using emerging technologies. Recently, he designed a unique smartwatch that blends engineering with style. This watch features multiple 3D-printed components and has a seven-segment LED display, which is completely different from traditional analog or digital watches. What makes it stand out is its motion sensor: when you lift your wrist, the screen lights up randomly, and when you lower it, the display turns off automatically.

The case and strap of the watch are made using 3D printing technology. It includes a real-time clock module powered by a USB power bank. The control system is managed by an Arduino microcontroller. Inspired by his wife, David added a new feature: an alcohol sensor that measures the user’s blood alcohol level. This helps users check their alcohol content before driving, especially at parties. Simply blowing into the sensor will trigger an alarm if the alcohol level exceeds the legal limit, reminding the user to take a taxi instead of driving.

This watch looks like a time bomb

Despite its innovative design, the watch has one major downside: it's quite large, over ten centimeters long, taking up most of the wearer’s forearm. Its size also makes it look like a giant time bomb, which might not be the most stylish look. However, David doesn't mind. He says the attention it draws is exactly what he wanted—people often notice it, even the police. “It feels great,” he said. “That’s what I was going for.”

David Ng’s next goal is to make it smaller

Now, David’s plan is to reduce the size of the watch as much as possible, turning it into a more compact and practical wearable device. He wants it to be both functional and fashionable. For more details, check out the video below:
