Super big idea: 3D printed handheld electromagnetic rail gun

When it comes to electromagnetic railguns, many people will think of the one that bombarded the combination robot Hercules in "Transformers 2". Recently, a geek named "NSA_Listbot" actually got one, but this electromagnetic track The gun was not stolen from the US military. It was printed in 3D ! In addition, NSA_Listbot has greatly reduced its size. The author is very interested in this cool railgun. In the end, how did the electromagnetic gun be made? Why is he doing this? So we decided to have this big god for a while. In fact, the NSA_Listbot is very approachable and does not have a tail after the fire. In an interview, he told us: "Before someone used 3D printing technology to make guns, the public opinion set off an uproar, and I wanted to change people's bad impressions on 3D printing guns through electromagnetic rail guns."

Can you make a simple self-introduction?

I spent my undergraduate and postgraduate studies at UCLA, focusing on nanoelectromechanical systems in aerospace engineering. In my spare time, I like to play with all kinds of parts and often use them to create something new. I really enjoy the pleasure of using free time to create new things. It will make me feel very fulfilled. Maybe this is why I decided to be a test pilot when I was young. Later, I became fascinated with research and development and engineering. They also made me experience the joy of being the "first person."

Is this your first time making a railgun?

No, I did one in high school. It was my physics class graduation design, but now this WXPR-1 is much bigger and more complicated than the original one.

Are you working in the field of engineering? Do you often use tools like CAD/3DP?

I studied engineering at university, but now I am working in other fields.

How did the project of this railgun come from?

To be honest, I am doing rail guns because of a bet with friends. In the eyes of everyone, I have always been an engineering expert, often making some ridiculous gadgets, but my friend is betting that I can't make railguns, which makes me very upset. After a while, I found a leisure job, so in my spare time I started to build railguns. In a year and a half, I was so busy, processing, welding, and finally printed the current railgun. In fact, the rail gun was completed in June this year, but I did not complete the system commissioning until mid-July. My friends (including those who gambled me for the railguns) have seen this guy in July, but until recently I have had the courage to put it on Reddit. To be honest, I didn't expect it to cause such a huge sensation.

What is the overall goal of this project?

My goal is to print the correct name for 3D. This technology can quickly transform a clumsy design into a portable and practical version. Before anyone used 3D printing technology to make guns, the public opinion set off an uproar, and I wanted to change people's bad impressions on 3D printing guns through electromagnetic guns. In the future, I will share the source files and code of the project to students, diehards and academia, and you will not see the second generation of railguns, even though WXPR-1 means Wirth eXperimental Portable Railgun Version 1 ( Wirth Test Portable Rail Cannon 1st Edition).

The electromagnetic gun seems to have a carbon dioxide tank. What is the device used for?

The carbon dioxide tank is the strong backing of the injection system. It is similar to the principle of a potato cannon, and the projectile is emitted along the direction of current flow through the armature. In addition, the projectile (the armature used in the electromagnetic gun) must reach a certain initial speed when it is launched, or it will be welded to the gun due to excessive current. Carbon dioxide can help the projectile speed up to 100 m/s, while the track will increase its speed to 250 m/s.

The NSA_Listbot's electromagnetic railgun uses six 300J, 350V, and 5500uF capacitors with a total weight of 20 pounds and can deliver more than 1050V and 1.8kj of emitted energy.

Does the railgun have to be done so big?

It's not necessary at all, just change the more advanced capacitors, you can make the railguns at least 10 pounds, and the capacitor on the WXPR-1 is I used to get from eBay for $50. In addition, there is room for improvement in the charging system. The charger I used has not been optimized. If I replace it with a zero voltage system (ZVS), the gun can be lighter by 3 to 4 pounds. So, if there is a second-generation electromagnetic gun, I can control its weight to about 30 pounds (27 pounds).

What other features are there for the WXPR-1 railgun?

For a non-professional project, this track design is very special. Ordinary enthusiasts will use a square cavity design because it is easy to manufacture, but this will greatly reduce efficiency. My track design is much more efficient, and the processing precision is much higher. In addition, my track uses a circular cavity design, which is probably the first in a non-professional project. I spent six months trying to figure out the design and tried a variety of N solutions (sometimes I gave up because the tolerance was more than 1 hair width). In addition, WXPR-1 uses a replaceable track, and other railguns want to change the track but the whole body will be dismantled. I have changed it and adopted the internal and external double-track design, so the inner rail can be easily replaced without disassembling the gun body. It is. This increases the ease of maintenance and makes the product more durable.

Which 3D printer did you use?

I use a delta 3D printer that prints polycarbonate material. In addition, I used the custom version of polyetherimide to make most of the print stencils, which were built to a diameter of 11 inches x 18 inches. I used materials such as polylactic acid, engineering plastics, nylon and polycarbonate in the manufacturing process. The radial and vertical print accuracy is 0.2 mm and 0.25 mm, respectively.

The unit uses the Arduino Uno R3 to manage the electronics on the railgun, monitor the voltage, current, temperature and battery voltage of the capacitor.
