Paper mill waste becomes environmentally friendly foam

Foam is a very versatile material that we can see in our packaging, whether it's furniture, accessories, or electrical appliances. Foam plays a role in thermal insulation and light weight in high-rise buildings, aviation, and automobiles. Among many synthetic materials, foam is also the "core" material, which plays a role in improving strength, reducing weight, reducing energy loss and insulation. The commonly used foams are all based on polymers, which have a great impact on the environment. On the one hand, these materials are not easily recycled; on the other hand, these materials are made from petroleum-refined products, so scientists are working hard to find environmentally friendly materials to make foam.

Recently, a Ph.D. at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel invented a method of making nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) into a foam. At the same time, he also found a way to make nanocrystalline cellulose from waste from paper mills.

In the papermaking process, a large amount of fiber is treated as waste. In Europe, for example, paper mills emit 11 million tons of fiber waste annually.

The doctor discovered that these fiber wastes are an excellent raw material for the manufacture of nanocrystalline cellulose, because the fiber waste discharged from these paper mills has a small particle size and can be processed into nanocrystalline cellulose with relatively few processes. .

The nanocrystalline cellulose foam he invented has the characteristics of being porous, light in weight and high in strength, and its technical indexes are comparable to those of the foam produced by the current technology. Experts expect that this technology that effectively uses industrial waste, if successfully applied to foam manufacturing, will greatly reduce its dependence on oil.
