Design and Implementation of NFC Mobile Payment System
0 Preface Mobile payment has become a popular and convenient way for users to make purchases using their mobile devices. This service allows individuals to pay for goods or services quickly and efficiently, significantly increasing user base and transaction volumes. According to Gartner, the global number of mobile payment users reached 245 million in 2013, representing a 22% year-on-year growth. It is projected to reach 450 million by 2017. In the same year, global mobile payment transactions surged by 44% to $235.4 billion, with an expected increase to $721.4 billion by 2017. NFC (Near Field Communication) near-field payment is a technology that enables mobile devices to send payment information to a merchant’s terminal via short-range communication. The process involves exchanging account and password details between the consumer's device and the merchant’s system using an embedded smart chip. Although NFC-based payments are still in the early stages of development due to technical and business model limitations, they are gradually gaining traction as more smartphones and NFC-enabled card readers become available. As adoption grows, this method is expected to see rapid expansion in the coming years. This paper presents the design and implementation of an NFC-based near-field payment system. The system leverages the SIM card for secure storage of applications and data, communicates with the merchant's POS through the phone’s NFC controller, and uses SOCKET technology to facilitate data exchange between the POS machine and an analog bank payment platform. To ensure the security of data transmission and the entire transaction process, several key transaction processes such as online, offline, top-up, withdrawal, and refund have been successfully implemented. 1 System Design 1.1 Comparison of Implementation Plans Based on different payment account carriers, there are mainly three solutions for real-time payment using NFC technology: NFC-SD, NFC-SIM, and NFC full-terminal. The NFC-SD solution stores the security module on an SD card and loads the financial account onto the mobile phone's SD card. However, this approach suffers from limited control over distribution and operation, as it is managed by various industries and not directly tied to the user. The NFC full-terminal solution involves embedding a financial account directly into the mobile phone and using its built-in NFC chip for non-contact payments. While effective, it requires high-end devices, which may necessitate users to upgrade their phones. The NFC-SIM solution, on the OTHER hand, loads the financial account onto the SIM card, allowing users to access the account information stored on the SIM chip during payments. This option offers greater flexibility in management and easier user transition between devices. After a thorough evaluation of these three options, the NFC-SIM solution was selected for its simplicity and adaptability. Figure 1 Comparison of three types of NFC near field payment technology solutions 1.2 System Structure The system architecture of the NFC mobile payment system designed in this paper is illustrated in Figure 2. It consists of key components such as the merchant’s POS machine, the POS access management system, the analog bank payment platform, and the card application download management platform. Figure 2 System structure diagram 1.3 Database Design The database is a critical component of the entire near-field payment system. It stores all relevant data, including system users, mobile phone users, merchant information, POS machine details, bank account information, and transaction records. These data are accessible for system use. Based on the functionality of the near-field payment system, the following tables were designed: a system user table, a system user group table, a system permission table, a consumer/merchant information table, a POS machine information table, a bank account table, a transaction record table, and additional log records.
