Creative PET bottle design

The smooth sidewalls of non-flanked beverage bottles allow HA Rider to accurately label, and MD Drinks can also make its Urban Detox line of beverage products avoid "wrinkle" labels.

Small and medium sized retailers are actively entering the beverage market, partly because the supply chain can meet their needs. They either face regional markets or promote beverage products to specific national consumers. These companies cannot afford the cost of producing customized beverage bottles, nor can they purchase expensive filling and packaging equipment. They usually rely on the contractor's technology and the co-packer's supplier network so that they can effectively bring these specific products to market.

This is a problem for contract packaging companies to pack the right products into the right packaging, which is more suitable for products with smaller production volumes. MD Drinks, based in Santa Monica, Calif., is a good example. Dr. Alex Hughes, a surgeon at the University of California Los Angeles-affiliated hospital, and Dayton Miller, a Harvard Business School graduate, created the company. The two entrepreneurs developed an "effective, scientific, all-natural" functional beverage branded under "Function."

“There is nothing really functional in the market. Since the 1990s, the state has reduced its intervention in the economy. This has resulted in a lot of novelties in the market, but there is no beverage to use this.” Hughes said.

In the spring of 2006, the company introduced a functional beverage to the American West Coast and Southwest markets. Hughes said that the brand's products for Urban Detox help drinkers recover from drunkenness. "Drunkers have special needs for this product and it's easy to get into the word-of-mouth market," Hughes said. In other words, with such a product, using the right packaging can effectively promote sales.

Hughes and Miller created Urban Detox branded beverages using a patented ingredient developed by Cincinnati-based condiment company Wild Flavors. The two partners believe they have the right product formula. Next, they needed the right bottle of drink to reinforce this message: This drink uses an innovative formula that contains special ingredients that have never been used in beverages before. Hughes explained: "Because our beverage products are very advanced, so we also hope that beverage bottles can show this."

The value of the right professional technology

This beverage uses innovative formulas and contains special ingredients that have never been used in beverages before. The two partners who founded MD Drinks need to have suitable beverage bottles to reinforce this information. In this case, contract-packers with expertise in filling and packaging specific products can help these young entrepreneurs to bring their newly invented products to market.

When Hughes contacted HA Rider & Sons for help, the research they conducted brought rewards. HA Rider introduced Hughes and Miller to PowerFlex, a new type of edgeless, hot-filled PET bottle offered by Amcor PET Packaging. So Hughes and Miller selected a 16-oz., 38-mm bottle-necked, round-shouldered bottle from the two existing PowerFlex series beverage bottles. Another specification is a 16 oz. flask. HA Rider has already successfully used this bottle to fill a bottled fish product for Trinity Springs. “HA Rider is very satisfied with the performance of this beverage bottle on the production line.” Hughes said when talking about similar projects of Trinity Springs.

Tom Rider, partner at HA Rider, said that his factory first mixed the ingredients of the Urban Detox series for MD Drinks, hot-filled them at a rate of 180 to 200 bottles per minute, and affixed the labels to the bottles. Then spin on the 38 mm translucent cover provided by Alcoa, and then place the filled drink bottle on a tray with a capacity of 24 bottles, and finally deliver the tray to the consumer.

"MD Drinks purchases all the raw materials," Rider said. "We put all the things together and we are responsible for all the trivial things. It's a very smooth project."

Creative bottle wall
The beverage bottle itself is the key to achieving smooth and smooth operation on the production line and warehousing and logistics links. In the past, it was necessary to hot-fill the side edges of the beverage bottle wall in order to resist deformation of the bottle body caused by the cooling of the interior liquid to room temperature. The PowerFlex bottle, on the other hand, absorbs the deformation forces caused by this internal “vacuum state” through a patented bottle bottom rather than a side wall. When the liquid in the beverage bottle cools, a specially designed diaphragm in the bottom of the bottle pulls upwards. Its geometric characteristics allow this inverted conical diaphragm to counteract the internal vacuum.

The technique used on the bottom of the bottle allows the side walls of the bottle to be free of side edges. As a result, this smooth bottle wall offers vendors more design choices, explains David Andison, vice president of business strategy at Amcor. “The bottle with side ribs creates some constraints, which limits possible design choices, and therefore limits the ability of brand owners to use this container to creatively expand the market.” Andison said.

Because the label surface of the bottle wall will be smoother, this beverage bottle will create a more attractive marketing effect. And, this smooth surface will also benefit contract packagers.

HA Rider used the Krones company's Canmatic labeler for labeling, and Tom Rider cited several advantages of the bottle without side-walls. First, because side edges are eliminated, companies do not have to worry about sticking problems when labeling. Second, the smooth surface of this beverage bottle also ensures that the label is properly bonded to the bottle wall.

Looks for a cleaner tag
This sideless bottle wall eliminates what Rider calls "wrinkled" tags. This can easily happen when the label is applied to a bottle with a side edge. "With this kind of bottle without side-edges, it is easy to accurately label and form a more attractive package," said Rider.

The side-edge construction of the PowerFlex bottle also provides another benefit for warehousing operations. This straight-wall design allows the beverage bottle to have greater top loading characteristics than other PET bottles, Andison said. This kind of straight wall has no pressure concentration point, so when the stacking occurs in the warehouse, there will be no pressure bending of the bottle. This is also good news for the contractor who is responsible for warehousing operation.

Provide services that affect the refinement of the market
Urban Detox Beverage is one of a series of functional beverages MD Drinks is promoting to the retailer under the Function brand. The company also hopes to sell it to the whole country.

The second and third drinks in this product line are Brainiac and Youth Trip. According to MD Drinks, Brainiac is a non-irritant beverage that increases mental acuity and memory. Youth Trip uses directional antioxidant energy to maintain strong connective tissue, bones and young skin.

The beverage market—especially tea beverages—has become very refined, and there have been niche product companies that have launched products for small-scale consumers. In general, they only focus on developing and promoting new products. They are looking for contract wrappers who can not only perform short runs and small amounts of production, but also provide suppliers with the right materials and eye-catching packaging designs to support their products' position in the corresponding market.
