OFweek 3D Printing Network. For 68-year-old FAA airframe design and maintenance expert Joel Leathers, 3D printing is more than just a passing interest — it's a passion that has grown over the years. In fact, Leathers owns eight desktop 3D printers, including one FlashForge, one Formlabs Form1+, three iBox SLA models, and three Delta-style machines. His collection reflects his deep involvement in the world of additive manufacturing.
“When people ask me what I do,†Leathers said, “I tell them I used to work for the FAA, but now I spend most of my time creating designs, converting them into STL files using a vernier caliper, and uploading them online.â€
Recently, he came across an online post from someone looking for a 3D-printed model of the solar system to help teach kids about space. Intrigued by the idea, Leathers decided to take on the challenge.
The solar system model is designed not just as a visual display, but as a functional representation of how celestial bodies move. It demonstrates the motion of planets around the sun and acts like a mechanical model showing how planetary orbits and gear ratios work together.
Using his usual design software, SolidWorks and MOI, Leathers set out to create a working model that included the Sun, Earth, Moon, and Venus, along with their orbital paths. After completing all the designs, he spent approximately four hours printing out the 10 different parts needed for the project.
In addition to the 3D-printed components, the model also required a motor to drive the gears, allowing the entire system to rotate automatically and simulate the movement of the planets in real time.
This project is just another example of how 3D printing continues to inspire people of all ages, turning complex ideas into tangible, interactive models. For Leathers, it's a perfect blend of his engineering background and his love for innovation.
