3D printed octopus robot with jet propeller

At Harvard University, a team of engineers led by Nicholas Bartlett has developed an innovative 3D-printed octopus-like robot that can bounce and adjust its movement with remarkable precision. This soft-bodied robot is designed to not only change the direction of its bounce but also control how it lands, ensuring the safety of sensitive electronic components inside. The robot's design blends elements of an octopus and a sea otter, giving it a unique, almost mythical appearance. The robot uses a propulsion system similar to rocket technology, featuring a pulsed jet engine that utilizes butane and oxygen. This allows it to leap up to six times its own height, making it highly agile and adaptable for various environments. To achieve this motion, Bartlett’s team created 3D-printed deformable legs that can be inflated individually at different levels, enabling precise control over the angle and force of each bounce. In addition, the researchers used a 3D printer to combine soft and rigid materials in varying proportions, creating a multi-layered robotic shell with nine distinct layers. This design makes body deformation during the entire bouncing and landing process predictable and controllable, allowing the robot to move safely without damaging its internal components. This breakthrough represents a significant step forward in the development of soft robotics, showing great potential for applications in search and rescue, exploration, and more. The robot's flexibility and adaptability make it ideal for navigating complex or unpredictable terrains. (Editor)
