Engineers led by Nicholas Bartlett from Harvard University have created a remarkable 3D-printed octopus-like robot with an elastic body and the ability to bounce. This innovative machine not only adjusts its bouncing direction but also controls how it lands, offering protection to its internal electronic components. The robot resembles a mix between a sea otter and a mythical creature, featuring a propulsion system similar to rockets. It uses a pulsed jet engine powered by butane and oxygen, allowing it to jump up to six times its own height. To achieve this unique movement, Bartlett’s team developed 3D-printed legs that can be individually inflated to different levels, enabling precise control over the takeoff angle. They used a multi-material 3D printer to combine soft and rigid materials in varying proportions, creating a flexible robotic shell with nine distinct layers. This design made the robot’s body deformation during bouncing and landing predictable and controllable, ensuring that delicate instruments inside remain safe.
