The development prospect of green paper environmental protection packaging is indispensable

[Chinese Packaging Network News] The four main materials in modern packaging—paper, plastic, metal, and glass—each have their own advantages and disadvantages. Among them, paper products are experiencing the fastest growth due to their low cost, abundant raw materials, and ease of sourcing. Unlike plastics, which are not easily biodegradable, or glass, which is fragile, and metals, which are heavy, paper is lightweight and easy to carry. Additionally, paper is biodegradable and can be recycled into new paper or used as plant fertilizer, helping reduce air pollution and improve environmental quality. For these reasons, paper packaging is considered one of the most promising green packaging options compared to plastic, metal, and glass. Paper pulp molding is a process where waste paper or finished pulp is broken down into a slurry and then vacuum-formed into a desired shape using a mold. This product is commonly known as a paper mold. There are two main types: one uses finished pulp to make daily items like food containers and instant noodle cups, while the other uses waste paper to produce packaging materials, such as cushioning pads and fillers, replacing foam plastics in industrial applications. Paper molds have emerged as an alternative to foam plastic due to the serious environmental issues caused by plastic waste, including "white pollution" and high disposal costs. Many developed countries have already banned or restricted the production, sale, and use of polystyrene foam. After extensive testing and comparison, paper molded products have become the best choice. These products can decompose naturally in the environment, similar to how plants break down. Their unique geometric design provides excellent shock absorption, impact resistance, and anti-static properties. In force value tests, they perform equal to or better than foam plastic. As a result, the European Union’s 1991 packaging and environmental regulations explicitly stated that “polystyrene (PS) foam should be avoided in transport and sales packaging, and replaced with pulp-molded products.” The ISO 14000 environmental management standards also emphasize that companies must ensure their products are non-polluting, recyclable, and reusable throughout the entire lifecycle—from raw material sourcing to end-of-life disposal. Paper mold products offer several advantages. They are made from waste paper, which is environmentally friendly and supports recycling efforts. These products are widely applicable, cost-effective, and easier to manufacture than foam plastic, with shorter production times and lower energy and material costs. They also have superior anti-static, anti-corrosion, and shock-absorbing properties. Unlike foam plastic, which relies on its material cushioning, paper molds use both their structural design and the natural properties of the paper for protection. In mechanical tests, they show better performance in terms of creep and deformation. Furthermore, additives like strength agents, flexible agents, and anti-aging agents can be added based on the specific needs of different products, offering more functional versatility than plastic. Paper molds can also be stacked, reducing transportation and storage costs. From simple egg trays, paper mold products have evolved into thousands of different packaging forms, showing strong development potential. With continuous improvements in basic equipment and technology, the industry continues to grow. Today, paper packaging is widely used in coastal areas of Guangdong, helping enterprises reduce costs, enhance competitiveness, build a positive corporate image, and open up new opportunities for development.
