Some pieces use a lot of scraps and joinery to create a solid look, significantly reducing their worth. Raw lacquer is a natural, non-toxic substance that creates a durable finish, while hot wax often uses industrial paraffin, which may contain harmful substances like dioxins. To illustrate the difference, Zhang Zhengji placed a hot cup on a waxed surface, leaving a clear imprint, while a lacquered surface remained unaffected even after heating. Lacquer not only resists heat but also develops a rich patina over time, enhancing its collectible value. He noted that the so-called "South Qibei wax" is actually an artificial imitation created by some sellers.
