As Cliff Tan, a TikTok influencer and author of "Feng Shui Modern," explains, “Feng shui is about enhancing your environment to make it as optimal as possible for your life.†Here are seven feng shui bedroom design ideas you can try this weekend to bring more harmony and positivity into your space.
The bed is the most important piece in your bedroom, so it should be placed in what's called the "command position." That means you should be able to see the door from your bed without being directly in line with it, and there should be a solid wall behind the headboard. Anjie Cho, an interior architect and feng shui expert in New York, recommends using a solid headboard to symbolize stability. “A headboard represents security. Avoid anything with holes or bars, as they may represent restriction,†she says.
Clutter disrupts the flow of energy in a space, according to Jill Croka, founder of Jill Croka Designs. She says, “It can lead to stagnation and hold you back from progress.†Keeping your nightstand and drawers free of unnecessary items helps maintain a peaceful atmosphere. A clean space allows positive energy to move freely and supports better rest and focus.
Symmetry brings balance and harmony to a space, which is key in feng shui. Using matching pairs like two sconces on either side of the bed or two nightstands creates a sense of stability. If symmetry isn’t possible, use other elements such as color, shape, or texture to create visual balance and intentional asymmetry.
Cho suggests using soft, calming colors like neutral tones, pale greens, and blues to promote relaxation. These shades are healing and soothing. Pale yellows bring grounding energy, while purples add elegance and confidence. Soft pinks and peaches can introduce warmth and comfort into the space.
Horizontal lines help create a sense of stability and calm. Think about using horizontal patterns in rugs, artwork, or furniture. A rectangular rug or landscape-oriented art can have a soothing effect on the space. These elements mimic the earth and provide a grounding presence in the room.
Avoid placing electronics like TVs, computers, or smartphones in your bedroom. Instead, opt for analog alternatives like a hot water bottle instead of an electric blanket. As Tan explains, “Electronics generate artificial energy that can disrupt the natural flow of your space.â€
If you have a large bedroom, consider dividing it into zones—like a sleeping area, a reading nook, or a relaxation spot. Rugs can help anchor each section and create a sense of structure. As Tan notes, “Large spaces can feel overwhelming, so defining areas helps bring clarity and balance.â€
