Xi'an Electronics University students use HoloLens to develop a cardiac platform

In this year's Microsoft Imagine Cup Innovation Cup, Microsoft ushered in dozens of student teams from around the world. The group showed a range of products, including helping rescuers reach the disaster area quickly, helping farmers manage livestock health, improving water quality, combating fake news, and supervising politicians.

As Microsoft looks forward to building a mixed reality ecosystem at this year's Build conference, it also sees some interesting HoloLens projects. One of the three biomedical engineering students from Xi'an University of Electronic Science and Technology in China, and they put forward this idea in the school innovation laboratory.

The three students were exposed to children with congenital heart disease during their studies, and they found that children's heart is usually small, so standard screening and diagnostic techniques are completely inappropriate for them. In fact, in some cases standard adult surgery can cause serious damage to small, fragile organs in children.

Not only does this cause a lot of problems during the examination, but it also causes more problems later in the surgery because the surgeon does not have the ideal level of information about the patient's heart. Therefore, the three students decided to develop a practical tool for this situation. The end result is the Surgical Assistant, a Windows medical imaging processing platform for 2D and 3D visualization.

Yang Maoqing of the Surgical Assistant team explained: "With our platform, we can localize the lesion while observing all the details of the lesion in a non-invasive way."

Like all Imagine Cup projects this year, the Surgical Assistant is deployed on the Microsoft cloud platform Azure, but the project also relies on computer diagnostics and decision algorithms on Azure Machine Learning Studio.

This cloud-based healthcare virtual application is a thriving area, especially for disciplines such as surgery that emphasize vision and require hours of practice to master the right skills, so this is great for a solution like this. Achieve realistic links without having to risk any practice on real patients.

Many applications for surgeons have emerged in the field of mixed reality, many of which are based on HoloLens' ability to cover holograms into the real world and its powerful collaboration capabilities.

Although the Surgical Assistant team was unable to participate in the finals at Microsoft headquarters in the United States due to visa issues, they are currently working with several senior Microsoft staff to improve and optimize the product structure. They are very optimistic about the prospects of deploying and expanding their products.

They now plan to continue working with more hospitals to develop products and deploy tools to help more children with chronic heart disease.

Yang Maoqing said: "We have been developing this system for more than 2 years. We have already tested it in the hospital environment. Now we want to let more people know about our work and cooperate with people who are interested in solving these problems. ""
