IL Serena, Italy: The new mid-century modern hotel

In the breathtaking Italian Alps, a stunning new mid-century modern hotel has recently opened its doors. Named Il Sereno Lago di Como, this luxurious property serves as a sister establishment to the renowned Le Sereno Saint-Barthélemy in the Caribbean, designed by the acclaimed Christian Liaigre. The architectural masterpiece behind Il Sereno Lago di Como is none other than the talented Spanish architect Patricia Urquiola, whose vision and meticulous attention to detail shaped every aspect of the hotel. SEE ALSO: The BMW Concept Motorcycle That Will Leave You Speechless Urquiola drew inspiration from the iconic Casa del Fascio, designed by the legendary Italian architect Giuseppe Terragni. Her modernist approach is evident in the hotel's sleek architecture, featuring a series of loggias capped by a flat garden roof that seamlessly blends with its surroundings. "What guests see from their view—the water, stone, greenery, or boats—are mirrored in the hotel's interiors," explains Urquiola. "I aimed to integrate the essence of the location in a contemporary manner." This commitment to harmony is showcased through the use of local materials like Ceppo di Gré and Pietra di Fossena stones, along with walnut wall panels and an earthy color palette of grays, browns, and soft greens. Architectural elements such as the black steel balustrade mesh echo throughout the interiors and even extend to the silicone-jointed decking of the hotel’s three Riva boats, crafted at its nearby Lake Iseo boatyard. The hotel's interior design features exclusive pieces from Urquiola's portfolio for brands like Cassina, Kettal, Molteni, B&B Italia, and Moroso. Each element, from Olivari door handles to Axor Hansgrohe taps and Flos lighting fixtures, reflects her dedication to quality. Notably, the 'Lariana' bathtub by Agape adds a touch of luxury to the bathrooms. Upon entering, guests are greeted by a 20-foot-tall door leading to vertical gardens designed by Patrick Blanc, complete with three plant-covered artworks. The hotel boasts a Ristorante Berton Al Lago, located at lake level, offering a menu crafted by Michelin-starred chef Andrea Berton, featuring fresh Lombardian produce paired with exquisite wines from the Valtellina valley. Guests can also unwind by the 18-meter infinity pool, which flows directly into the lake, complemented by a private beach. Despite its grandeur, the hotel avoids flashy aesthetics. "There should be nothing more than necessary," says Urquiola. Even the staff uniforms feature locally woven silk scarves, reflecting her dedication to detail. Inside, a staircase of floating walnut treads leads down to the restaurant, encased in a copper-bronze forest of metal rods. The restaurant offers a refined menu of local delicacies, while the infinity pool provides a serene escape. For those seeking a touch of elegance and refinement, Il Sereno Lago di Como offers a retreat where every detail tells a story. Its understated charm and seamless integration with nature make it a true gem in the world of hospitality. IMAGE SOURCE: Wallpaper --- Looking for more design inspiration?
